The Vikram Sarabhai Library at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad sits at the heart of one of India’s most celebrated academic campuses. Originally designed by the visionary architect Louis Kahn, it embodies timeless architectural strength and clarity. To preserve this iconic legacy and upgrade its learning experience for current and future generations, Somaya & Kalappa Consultants (SNK) were appointed as the lead restoration architects, carefully conserving the heritage structure while enabling modern academic requirements.

IIMA partnered with CIVOM to transform the traditional library into a hybrid learning environment that supports deep study, collaboration, technology integration, and breakthrough research making it a benchmark project in academic space design and one of CIVOM’s most impactful collaborations.

The revitalized library now embodies a spectrum of flexible and future-ready spaces designed for 21st-century learners. CIVOM introduced flexible furniture systems and collaborative configurations that support group interaction, individual focus, and dynamic research activities. Comfortable breakout zones and thoughtfully crafted focus areas coexist with tech-enabled meeting zones, allowing students to seamlessly switch between modes of study without compromising comfort or spatial clarity.

Every learning niche whether it’s a quiet carrel, collaborative table, or discussion hub reinforces the core academic spirit of IIMA’s research culture.

CIVOM’s intervention at the Vikram Sarabhai Library focused on delivering a multi-modal learning ecosystem that responds to how students and faculty engage with knowledge today:

  • Modern Hybrid Library Experience: Residential and collaborative furniture, flexible seating layouts, and designated focus areas enhance both individual concentration and group discovery.
  • Collaborative and Breakout Spaces: Zones designed for discussion, idea exchange, and teamwork make peer learning and mentoring a natural part of academic work.
  • Technology Integration: Interactive spaces support digital research, online repositories, and presentation needs alongside traditional reading and print research.
  • Shelving & Storage Solutions: Smart shelving maximizes capacity without overwhelming the space, preserving openness while ensuring accessibility.
  • Comfort & Functional Flow: Human-centred design and ergonomic detailing ensure students can engage deeply with their work for sustained periods.

    By integrating contemporary learning tools with the heritage aesthetic of the library, CIVOM helped create a space that honours its architectural roots while supporting evolving pedagogies. The result is a library that feels alive with possibility a place where knowledge is not only stored, but actively created and shared. This project stands as a benchmark for heritage library transformation across India blending visionary design by SNK with CIVOM’s solutions that shape how learning happens in the 21st century.

Hi, I’m Mr. Selvaraj, Principal of ACT Secondary School. After hearing about CIVOM, we decided to set up a library in our school. We approached CIVOM and their team, who came to meet with me. The first meeting went very well; they explained clearly how they would set up the library, including the different models, designs, and materials for furniture and racks. It took them about two months to manufacture the materials and furniture. Once everything was ready, they came to our school, identified the room for the setup, and completed the entire project in just 4-5 days. They took care of everything—flooring, materials, furniture, and the complete interior. The results were fantastic. On the first day back, the students immediately fell in love with the library. They were drawn to the welcoming environment, the new furniture, and the overall positive atmosphere. This new library has created a wonderful space that motivates and energizes the students to engage with books. I highly recommend CIVOM to other schools for setting up their libraries. Thank you.

CIVOM has set up several state-of-the-art laboratories on the campus of Parul University. Among the most notable are the Medical Library at the Parul Institute of Medical Sciences and Research and our library for the BBA college. If you visit these libraries, you'll see some of the finest facilities in university education.
In addition to the libraries, CIVOM has also established admission cell offices and faculty offices for us. The feedback from parents, students, and teachers has been overwhelmingly positive. Everyone is very satisfied with the work done by CIVOM. The promoters of CIVOM have a fantastic sense of aesthetics, and the comfort and quality of their infrastructure are remarkable.
Given our satisfaction with this project, we have also entrusted CIVOM with the establishment of our Homeopathy and Ayurveda libraries, which will be coming up soon. Additionally, they will be setting up various faculty offices on our university premises.
